Preventing and Managing Knee Pain

COSPT specializes in assessing and managing musculoskeletal disorders, including muscle injuries, joint pain, spine issues, and nerve problems. Today, we’ll delve into preventing and managing knee issues.

Understanding Knee Pain

Knee pain can be influenced by various factors, including aging, degenerative changes, and repetitive movements. Here are some key points about knee pain and its management:

  1. Aging and Degenerative Changes: As we age, degenerative changes in our joints are common. However, these changes do not always cause pain. It is possible to have arthritic changes without experiencing impairment.
  2. Imaging and False Positives: Advanced imaging like MRI and CT scans have their place in medicine, but they can also show false positives. Many people have degenerative changes or meniscal tears visible on imaging without experiencing any pain or functional issues.
  3. Inflammation: Although inflammation is often mentioned in advertisements for anti-inflammatory medications, true inflammatory problems are relatively rare. Most knee issues are mechanical, requiring movement-based solutions rather than anti-inflammatory treatments alone.
  4. Movement and Prolonged Positions: Repetitive movements and prolonged positions can contribute to knee problems. It’s essential to vary joint movements and interrupt sedentary positions to maintain joint health.

Anatomy of the Knee

The knee joint is composed of:

  • Femur (thigh bone): The upper part of the leg bone, ending in two knuckles.
  • Tibia (larger lower leg bone): These knuckles sit in concave surfaces on the tibia, stabilized by the meniscus.
  • Patella (kneecap): Positioned at the front of the knee joint, it connects to the quadriceps muscle, enabling powerful movements.
  • Ligaments: Surrounding ligaments hold the bones together, ensuring proper joint movement.

Maintaining Healthy Knees

To keep your knees healthy, consider these strategies:

  1. Active Lifestyle: Engage in regular physical activities such as walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, or weightlifting. Active joints are healthier and less prone to degenerative changes.
  2. Range of Motion and Flexibility: Move your joints to their full range of motion to prevent stiffness and maintain flexibility. This helps prevent the loss of joint function over time.
  3. Strength Training: Strengthen the muscles that support the knee to enhance resilience to stress and strain. This helps in performing everyday activities like climbing stairs and squatting.
  4. Interrupting Sedentary Positions: If your job involves prolonged sitting or repetitive movements, regularly interrupt these positions with different movements to keep your joints healthy.

Self-Care and Preventive Movements

Here are some specific movements to help prevent and manage knee pain:

  • Back Extensions: Stand against a countertop and bend backwards, or lie down and press up into an extended position. Perform 8-10 repetitions to maintain lower back health and potentially prevent knee pain related to lower back issues.

  • Knee Extensions: Sit and straighten your knee using the quadriceps muscle, holding the position for about five seconds. Repeat 8-10 times to ensure your knee joint maintains its full range of motion.
